Employment Networking Job Talk - Careers Employment Jobs Hiring - Nationwide

Those considering a career in the healthcare industry will find plenty of options in the form of Atlanta nurse jobs.

As of 2006, Atlanta had a population of 486,411 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Georgia as a whole is home to 9,363,941 people. As both the city's and state's population continues to increase, so does the need for healthcare professionals.

Nationwide, the healthcare industry is one of the few that has managed to continue thriving, despite the economic recession. This is evidenced by Atlanta's healthcare industry, which has managed to add jobs on a monthly and yearly basis as of late.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta area's education and health services industry employed 270,900 workers during November 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 270,500 workers during October and a 2.8 percent increase from November 2008.

So where do you start if you want to pursue an Atlanta nurse job? The first and most important task is to get the proper education. Some of the most prominent nursing programs in Atlanta are Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Mercer University's Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, and Georgia State University's Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing.

Another advantage is that many of the colleges, universities and research centers throughout Atlanta work together with the city's numerous healthcare facilities to create a cooperative community.

"The open and collegial atmosphere of the health institutions in Atlanta has spurred numerous partnerships that benefit both the researchers themselves and, eventually, the health of the nation and the world," the Atlanta Development Authority notes.

Some of the organizations that participate in partnerships include: CARE USA; The Carter Center; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Emory University Rollins School of Public Health; Global Health Action; Morehouse School of Medicine; and The Task Force for Global Health.

One of the biggest hospitals in Atlanta is Dekalb Medical Center, which has more than 500 beds and serves about 500,000 patients each year. The hospital also has a Level III trauma center and is known for its specialization in treating stroke and chest pain.

Another well-known facility is Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, which is one of only nine hospitals throughout the United States that performs an ABO-incompatible pediatric heart transplant. The facility was previously ranked sixth among the top pediatric hospitals in the nation by Child magazine.

Gwinnett Medical Center is located just outside of Atlanta. The non-profit center, which houses 553 beds, served 400,000 patients during 2008. The center is comprised of two hospitals and several supporting medical facilities that employ 4,300 workers and 800 affiliated physicians.
