Construction Jobs in Fort Lauderdale Go Green with ARRA Funding

A new round of funding for two local organizations will help create green construction jobs in Fort Lauderdale.

Gov. Charlie Crist recently announced that two Broward County organizations have been awarded Pathways Out of Poverty grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The funding is part of a $12.4 million green job grant awarded to Florida.

Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America, Inc. in Broward County will receive a $4.9 million grant, which it will use to train about 1,350 people for six different green jobs, including weatherization technician and installer; solar and photovoltaic systems installer; and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green associate.

According to the South Florida Business Journal, the nonprofit organization operates through a national network of local affiliated organizations. Its mission is to provide education, training, employment and hosting services to the disadvantaged.

The Broward County Minority Builders Coalition, which includes WorkForce One of Broward County, received a $3.2 million grant, which it will use to train 1,000 workers in technologies that improve energy efficiency. The funding will be used to train and place workers in occupations involving design and installation of solar energy panels and systems, weatherization of buildings and LEED certification.

Pathways Out of Poverty grants are meant to support programs that help disadvantaged areas find ways out of poverty by providing training and creating jobs in energy efficient and renewable energy industries. About 2,500 Florida residents are expected to receive training because of these grants.

Overall, 38 Pathways Out of Poverty grants, ranging from $1 million to $8 million, have been awarded. The ARRA dedicated a total of $500 million to the program.
