How My Thesis Helped Me Land a Good Job

For some people, a thesis is nothing more than a ticket out of college, a duty that must be accomplished to please professors and the people who pay for their exorbitant tuition fees. Little do these people know that without a well-written thesis they are seriously putting their future professional life in danger.

When I was applying for work, I noticed that nearly all hiring mangers who interviewed me asked about my thesis. This got me bemused for some time until someone told me that hiring managers do this to gauge an applicant’s capacity to persevere and to check his ability to reason out and write well. Hearing that caused me to let out a big sigh of relief because I got a decent grade on my thesis.

I have to admit there were times when I felt like giving up. There were days when I just want to pack my bags and take a job at the local burger joint, or somewhere that does not require its employees to have a Master’s degree, or any degree at all for that matter. When this thinking besets me, I just mull over the fact that if dumber and more shiftless people were able to produce a decent enough thesis paper, so why can’t I.

All those long sleepless nights of research and writing, not to mention months of no social life, finally paid off when I got my first job. It is by entering the corporate world that I only got to realize that thesis writing was really a preparation for the harsh realities of life. The long hours of work and occasional spats with thesis mates and instructors were really a training to strengthen my character so I can handle tight deadlines, unreasonable clients and even devilish bosses.
