The
University of Texas at Dallas recently announced that it will offer a master's degree in science in innovation and entrepreneurship through the university's
School of Management. This accounts for the university's first entrepreneurship degree, with the university serving as the only state college in Texas to offer such a program.
The new program will mainly target working professionals, with about 25 students expected to take part in the program during the first year, and about 140 students to take part in the program during the fifth year. Students will be required to complete 36 credit hours of evening and online classes, which can take two to three years.
"This new offering represents an important step toward national recognition of our outstanding programs in innovation and entrepreneurship," Hasan Pirkul, dean of the UTD School of Management, told
The Dallas morning News. "The degree is unique in its dual focus on technology-based innovation within both the mature corporation and the new venture start-up."
Since entrepreneurship
education emerged during the early 1970s, people have become increasingly interested in running their own businesses. The two recessions during the last 10 years have added to that interest, as many laid-off workers are starting their own businesses out of necessity.
Today, almost twice as many colleges offer a degree or certificate in entrepreneurial studies than in 1999, according to the
College Entrance Examination Board. In addition, federal data shows that graduate and undergraduate entrepreneurship degrees awarded by colleges have tripled during the last decade.
