More People Search For Chicago Jobs in First Quarter of 2009

Many large job search engines keep track of what users look for and the amount of job listings posted in specific areas. This allows them to notice changes in the number of positions listed online and how many people are looking for work in each area. They frequently release this information so that it is easier to understand the job market. According to the most recent report from Simply Hired, more people are looking for jobs in Chicago, Illinois than at the end of 2008.

Simply Hired recently released it’s 1st Quarter (January 1st to March 31st) Job Trends report, which showed that the number of people searching for Chicago Jobs jumped 15 percent in the last three months. Such information usually means that there are more people in that area who are currently unemployed. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data seems to fall in line with this conclusion.

According to the Bureau, the percentage of people looking for work in Chicago jumped from 0.3 percent from February’s 9.0 percent to 9.3 percent in March. This is particularly significant when viewed in comparison to last year’s data. During March of 2008 only 5.6 percent of the city’s population was considered unemployed.

Other areas that saw an increase in the number of people looking for jobs included San Francisco and the Bay Area, both of which saw the same 15 percent increased experienced in Chicago, Boston, where there were 17 percent more job seekers, Milwaukee and Washington, D.C.

The fact that there are more active job seekers now that at the end of 2008 comes as no surprise. During March the country’s unemployment rate climbed 0.4 percent from February’s 8.1 percent to 8.5 percent. With fewer jobs to go around, this means that a larger number of unemployed individuals are vying for an increasingly limited number of positions.

Although jobs may be harder to come by, experts suggest that job seekers continue to look for employment instead of allowing themselves to become discouraged. New positions are posted online everyday, which means its only a matter of time before a promising opportunity is located.
