Hundreds of layoffs in the area will result in the loss of many
Nashville TN jobs.
The
Nashville Business Journal has reported that during the last week, six employers documented mass layoffs with the
Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Of those employers, four are located in Middle Tennessee. Layoffs will result in the loss of 333
local jobs and a total of 471 job losses throughout the state.
The companies in Middle Tennessee include:
Trinity Marine Products Inc. - This company manufactures barges and deck fittings. Officials reported the company's Ashland City facility laid off 55 workers between October 17 and December 1.
Albany International Corporation - This paper forming company is planning to eliminate the remaining 156 workers at its Portland, Tenn., facility by June 30, 2010. The plant will then be closed and all of the company's work will be moved to Wisconsin and Canada.
Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. - This Murfreesboro-based company, which filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of this year, laid off its 37 workers on September 1.
L&W Engineering - This automotive stamping and welded assembly company opened in Murfreesboro last year and was the first tenant in the Elam Farms industrial park. The company laid off 85 workers on November 25.
Although
Nashville's November unemployment rate has yet to be released, Tennessee's unemployment rate decreased from 10.5 percent to 10.3 percent. Despite that decrease, the state's current rate is still higher than the national unemployment rate of 10 percent.
The Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin area had a total non-farm
employment of 731,700 workers during November, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 728,000 workers during October, but a 3.4 percent decrease from last year.
