Thousands of temporary
Phoenix government jobs are now available thanks to the United States
Census Bureau.
The Census Bureau is looking for about 3,000 temporary workers in Phoenix to help process 2010 Census forms.
Vangent Inc., which works as a subcontractor for
Lockheed Martin, will make the local hires. Employees will work for the Paper Data Capture Center in Phoenix, which will process 40 percent of the country's Census forms.
Vangent, based in Virginia, provides outsourcing services and works closely with the federal government. In addition to its Phoenix site, the company also is operating Census call centers in Lawrence, Kan., and Sandy, Utah
According to an article by the
Phoenix Business Journal, local
positions are available for data entry personnel, team leaders, document preparation clerks, sorter and scanner operators, check-in clerks and mail receipt and mail handlers. Full-time and part-time workers are needed, with pay ranging from $11.49 per hour to $17.36 per hour, with an additional $3.35 per hour cash stipend in lieu of benefits.
Most of the 3,000 employees will be hired by January 2010, with workers for leadership positions being hired this November. In order to be eligible for employment, candidates are required to pass a criminal background check, which includes fingerprinting, as well as possess a high school diploma or equivalent, be legally eligible to work in the United States and sign a sworn statement to protect Census data.
The 2010 Census is the 23rd Decennial Census, as required by the United States Constitution. Data from the Census will be used to apportion the U.S.
House of Representatives and to distribute $400 billion in federal funds each year to local, state and tribal governments for various projects, including new roads, bridges and schools.
