Employment Networking Job Talk - Careers Employment Jobs Hiring - Nationwide

If you're considering a career in public service, you may want to check out Portland government jobs.

In most places throughout the country, the government industry has managed to remain strong, despite the economic recession. Portland is no exception, as the city has seen employment in its government industry increase on a monthly basis, despite a small yearly decline.

The Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton area's government industry employed 149,300 workers during November 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 148,000 workers during October, but a .9 percent decrease from November 2008.

On a local level, the Portland City Council - which includes a mayor, four commissioners and an auditor - is responsible for governing the city. According to Wikipedia, each member of the council is selected through a citywide election process to serve a four-year term.

Sam Adams serves as Portland's current mayor, while the four commissioner seats are filled by Amanda Fritz, Nick Fish, Dan Saltzman and Randy Leonard, and the auditor position is filled by LaVonne Griffin-Valade.

The auditor is responsible for providing: checks and balances on the government; accountability for the use of public resources; and information and reports on various matters of city government. Neighborhoods throughout Portland are connected to the government through the Office of Neighborhood Involvement, which serves as a coalition between government officials and neighborhood associations.

One thing that sets Portland apart from all other areas in the nation is that, aside from the City Council, the city and its surrounding metropolitan area are served by Metro, a directly elected regional government. Metro is responsible for land use and transportation planning, solid waste management and map development.

In addition, Metro owns and operates the Oregon Convention Center, Oregon Zoo, Portland Center for the Performing Arts and Portland Metropolitan Exposition Center. Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties also work to provide services to the Portland area.

When it comes to federal government, Portland is designated into three congressional districts, with most of the city located in the 3rd District. That district is currently represented by Earl Blumenauer, while the portion of the city in the 1st District is represented by David Wu and the portion within the 5th District is represented by Kurt Schrader.

The City of Portland is often considered one of the most progressive in the United States, with residents there long preferring Democrats over Republicans. All three of the city's representatives, as well as Oregon's two Portland-born senators, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, are Democrats. Adams became the city's first openly-gay mayor during 2009.
